Panthers Suffer First Loss Of Season

Margis sweeps diving for third-straight time to start season

CHICAGO – Rachel Margis swept both boards for the third-straight time this season but it wasn't enough as UIC claimed a narrow win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team, 129-114, Saturday from the Flames Natatorium.

"We had mixed results today," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "We are a capable enough team to have won two meets today, but we are not physically or mentally ready to do so. Swimming is one of those sports that those two things need to be in perfect balance. As a program we understand the importance of our training model and what it takes to be fast in February.

"I am very happy with my sophomore group of women and men. Year two into our training, you are seeing them start to take off and come into their own.

"We had a number of other highlights and wins from freshman through seniors, but we are looking forward to taking the next big step together as a group. Iowa should be a great meet for us."

Margis led the way for Milwaukee by winning both diving boards for the third-straight time this season for Milwaukee. The Racine native started things off with a convincing win on one meter with a score of 266.78. Newcomer Carley Thomas came in second overall at 227.33.

Margis later won the three-meter competition with an outstanding score of 312.98 – blowing away the competition by a full 68 points.

Freshman Shelby Rozeboom claimed yet another win n the 50 free. The newcomer from Mount Horeb, Wis. took first in the 50 free with a strong time of 24.06 for the win.

Danielle Kudis also claimed a win for the Panthers. The freshman collected a convincing win in the 100 free in 52.50, nearly a full second ahead of UIC's top swimmer. Mandie Siehs came in third in 53.58.

Milwaukee also claimed a win in the 200 free relay. Rozeboom, Arica Smith, Emma Roch and Siehs teamed up to post a time of 1:36.86, taking first by nearly two full seconds over UIC's top team.

UWM had numerous other strong showings on the day, including Kudis (1:57.36) taking second in the 200 free, Addison Skogman (2:08.55) finishing runner-up in the 200 IM and Natalie O'Connell (2:13.81) taking second in the 200 fly.

Next up for Milwaukee is the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational. The three-day meet starts Friday, Dec. 4 and runs until Sunday, Dec. 6.
