Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving needed a strong finish in their 200 freestyle relays and got just that to beat the University of Wisconsin for the first time in program history.

Entering the final event of the day, UWM needed to have both relays finish in the top three to finally edge their in-state rivals. The Panthers team of Kyle Trelka, David Dvorak, Mike Brady and Nathan Welchlin took first (1:24.02) and the second team of Jordan Diel, Brady Garner, Caleb Sandvold and Sam Niesen easily finished third (1:25.42) to secure the victory, 149-145.

"It's an exciting day to be a Panther," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "The men's 200 free relay is what won the meet for us. We knew we had to finish (first and third) in that last event and that's what we did. All eight of those individuals were crucial to the win."

Milwaukee also received first-place finishes from senior Brady Huemann in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and from freshman Kenneth Stelpflug in the 1000 freestyle. Stelpflug, in his first career collegiate race, posted a time of 9 minutes, 50.08 seconds, over eight seconds faster than the runner up.

While the swimmers had a strong day in the pool, the divers also played a major role.

Freshman K.J. Heger took first on both the one-meter (293.25) and three-meter (282.53) boards in his first ever collegiate action, while the Panthers swept both events overall.

In the one meter, freshman Andy LaFleur finished second with sophomore Trevor Sisson taking third. In the three meter, Sisson took second while senior Shane Conner rounded out the scoring.

"K.J. did very well for us in his first time out there," Clements said. "This is the first time we've beaten Wisconsin in the history of the program and we'll gladly take first every time."

The 400 medley relay led the meet off with a great race, as the combination of Niesen, Huemann, Diel and Welchlin finished second, just over half a second from first place.

UWM also got second-place finishes from senior Sam Keele (100 and 200 breast and 200 IM), sophomore Chris Jenkyns (200 backstroke), Diel (100 and 200 butterfly), Trelka (50 free), Welchlin (100 free) and Stelpflug (500 free).

The Panthers return home next week to host Grand Valley State Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
