Dayton, Ohio -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team used an all-around team effort and improved to 4-0 overall after a 181.5-106.5 win over Wright State Saturday morning in Dayton, Ohio.
Freshman Kenny Stelpflug led the way for UWM, winning both the 500 free (4:47.00) and the 1000 free (9:50.37) for the third-straight meet to bring home two of the team's impressive 14 first-place finishes on the day.
"As always, the men put up a strong performance across the entire team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "Kenny continued on his winning ways with victories in the 1000 and 500. Sam Keele picked up two wins and K.J. Heger won both boards, but we also won every other event besides the 50 and 100 free."
Keele won the 200 IM (1:58.04) along with taking the top spot in the 100 breast with a time of 59.91.
In diving, Heger won the one-meter (277.58) and three-meter boards (291.15) in just his fourth-ever collegiate competition.
Senior Sky Boggio took the top spot in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.05, nearly a second and a half over the second-place finisher.
Sophomore Chris Jenkyns ran away with the 200 back, finishing in 1:56.28, over eight seconds in front of the next swimmer.
In the 200 butterfly, senior Evan Green (1:57.29) just edged out Boggio (1:57.55) for the top spot with freshman Ryan Finke (2:01.07) closely behind at third.
Junior Sam Niesen, seniors Brady Huemann and Jordan Diel and junior David Dvorak combined to start the day off well by taking first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.33.
Also taking first on the day individually were Niesen (100 back), Huemann (200 back) and junior Nathan Welchlin (200 free).
Niesen also teamed up with juniors Mike Brady, Brady Garner and Welchlin to take the top spot in the final event of the day, posting a time of 3:09.34 in the 400 free relay.
"I was very pleased with the overall effort of the team today," Clements said. "Following a 6 p.m. Friday meet with an 11 a.m. Saturday meet is tough, but it is something that we need to do each year to prepare us for our four day championship meet in February. The most encouraging thing that I saw today is that we were stronger on day two."
The Panthers return to the pool this Friday when they head to Wheaton College to take on the Thunder.
