CHICAGO, Ill. -
Sophomores Nathan Welchlin and Sam Niesen each won a pair of events to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team to an easy 208.5-91.5 victory over the University of Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Myers-McLoraine Pool. The Panthers improved to 3-0 all-time against the Maroons and moved to 8-3 on the season in dual meets.
The winning did not end there, as eight other individuals and the 400 freestyle relay team all posted victories on the day to help Milwaukee to the big win.
Welchlin topped the field in the 100 freestyle (46.79) as well as the 100 butterfly (50.55). Niesen swept the backstroke events, claiming the 100 in 52.81 (edging Welchlin's 53.33) and the 200 in 1:53.43.
The diving team helped out, with junior Jake Koll winning the one-meter with 258.75 points and freshman Trevor Sisson claiming the three-meter event with 271.55 points. Sisson was also second on the one with 249.55 points.
"Overall, there were some very bright spots on the night," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "Sam Niesen had a great night and had some quick times and we had Danielle Wenger and Diana Diel and a few others win a pair of events. A meet like this gave us a chance to work on some of the finer points and tune up some things and we accomplished that. It really gave us a chance to look at who will be on the conference team and gave us an opportunity to see some third events for some athletes. It wasn't our greatest meet of the season, but we accomplished what we set out to do."
Freshman Chris Jenkyns and sophomore Brian Verink gave UWM a solid start to the night in the 1000 freestyle, with Jenkyns winning in 9:46.40 and Verink right behind in 9:59.11.
A couple of close races saw UWM finish one-two: in the 200 freestyle, junior Evan Green (1:45.36) edged sophomore Cris Smith (1:45.65). Even closer was the 50 free, where sophomore David Dvorak (21.75) clipped sophomore Mike Schalla (21.80). Another tight finish saw Smith beat out senior Dan Heraly in the 500 free, 4:46.41 to 4:47.07.
Junior Brady Huemann (58.92) won the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Caleb Sandvold the 200 IM (1:59.09) and the 400 free relay team (3:09.95) rounded out the list of winners for Milwaukee.
UWM is back in town for the final home meet of the season. Join the team against Western Illinois Jan. 29 for a 1 p.m. meet at the Klotsche Natatorium.
