EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team topped North Dakota Saturday afternoon when it competed in a quad meet at Northwestern University. The Panthers defeated the Fighting Sioux, 233.5-63.5, while falling to league-foe UIC, 182-117 and the host Wildcats, 184-113.

"UIC swam really well and they battled it out with Northwestern," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "Jake Koll was impressive on the boards and Jake Kalinowski had a good day. We knew UIC was a good dual team going in, but we did manage some strong times. Sam Niesen had great times and dropped a lot. And the 200 free relay team closed with a victory, so that was nice to see. The team is swimming pretty tired and still putting up good times doing it so that was good to see."

The 200 freestyle relay team of sophomores Nathan Welchlin, Mike Schalla, Mike Brady and senior Jake Kalinowski topped the four-team field, winning in a season-best time of 1:23.86.

Kalinowski also had strong showings in the sprints, taking second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 free. His time of 21.23 in the 50 was a season-best and was just touched-out by the winning clocking of 21.14. In addition, Welchlin was third in the 100 in 46.89, just behind the winning 46.67. Welchlin also took third in the 200 free, with his time of 1:42.67 less than a second behind the winner.

Junior Jake Koll had a good night in the diving events, placing second on the one-meter with 238.50 points and third on the three-meter with 257.45 points.

Sophomore Sam Niesen helped out with a third place effort in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in a season-best 1:56.62. He also took third in the 100 back, also in a season-best time of 53.01. Junior Kyle Trelka tied him in the race with the same 53.01 showing.

Junior Jordan Diel led the way for UWM in the 200 butterfly, with the Panthers taking spots three through six in the event. Diel's third-place time was 1:53.78. He also placed fourth in the 100 fly in 50.44.

Other top finishers for Milwaukee included junior Brady Huemann and freshman Jeff Maxwell. Huemann was fourth in both breaststroke events, finishing a season-best 59.01 in the 100 and 2:09.06 in the 200. He also took sixth in the 400 IM in 4:16.41. Maxwell led the way in the distance events, placing third in the 1650 freestyle in 16:41.44 and seventh in the 500 free in 4:50.11.

Up next, Milwaukee closes out the month of November with a trip to the Stevens Point Border Battle next weekend, where it will look to defend its team title from last year.
