MADISON, Wis. -
Diana Diel broke the freshmen record in the 100 butterfly to highlight the action for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team in its season opener Friday against the University of Wisconsin.
Diel touched the wall in 58.33 in the 100 fly, eclipsing the freshmen standard of 58.85 last set by Molly Finn in 2006. She also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle in 24.81.
"I feel like we did a very good job tonight," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "As a team, we were much faster than we were in the opener last season. There were numerous good swims and a lot of very good times overall. Opening against a tough Big Ten team is never easy, but I was pleased with how we did."
On the night, the Badgers did sweep each event and won, 166-66, with three of the winning times eclipsing NCAA `B' standards in what was also the season opener for UW.
Senior Kelsey George led the way in the diving events, placing a close second on the one-meter board with a point total of 257.33 - less then three points behind the winning tally. She was also second on the three-meter, totaling 259.13 points.
Another freshman had a strong showing, as Emily McClellan was second in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.10. Junior Sarah Wardecke was right behind, taking third in the race with a time of 1:06.31.
Wardecke also had a solid swim in the 100 freestyle, placing second in 53.17. Senior Danielle Wenger was third in the 1000 free (10:26.39) and fourth in the 500 free (5:09.27).
The women will hit the road next weekend for two meets, swimming at Grand Valley State University Friday at 5 p.m. and then at Valparaiso Saturday at 3 p.m.
