MADISON, Wis. - Junior Brady Huemann won the 100 breaststroke but the University of Wisconsin used strong performances across the board to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team a loss Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

The Panthers did get second-place efforts from the 200 medley relay team, senior Dan Heraly, juniors Kyle Trelka and Jordan Diel, sophomore Mike Schalla and freshmen Jeff Maxwell and Trevor Sisson on the night.

"I feel like we did a very good job tonight," UWM head coach Kyle Clements said. "As a team, we were much faster than we were in the opener last season. There were numerous good swims and a lot of very good times overall. Opening against a tough Big Ten team is never easy, but I was pleased with how we did."

Wisconsin's Tyler Hines won the 500 and 1000 freestyle and Daniel Lester eclipsed the NCAA `B' qualifying time in winning the 100 butterfly to lead the Badgers to the 146-84 victory, claiming wins in 12 of 13 events.

The 200 medley relay team of senior Matt Kluczinske, Huemann, Diel and Trelka led off the meet with a great race, touched out at the end by 67-hunderedths of a second with a time of 1:34.89.

Heraly was second in the 500 free in 4:43.73, while Diel took second in the 100 butterfly in 50.41.

Trelka led the way for a two-three-four finish for UWM in the 50 freestyle, with Trelka (second at 21.65), senior Jake Kalinowski (third at 21.75) and Schalla (third in 21.81) all right behind the winning time of 21.21.

Schalla was also runner-up in the 100 free at 47.20, with sophomore Nathan Welchlin third at 47.83 in the race.

Maxwell did not show any freshmen nerves, taking second in the 1000 free in a time of 9:48.67, less then three seconds from a victory. Heraly was close behind, touching the wall in 9:52.44.

"I was impressed with Jeff Maxwell," Clements said. "He swam a very good time for his first collegiate meet. Having four of the top six finishers in the 50 free was also a nice result."

In diving, Sisson placed second on the one-meter board with a score of 244.28.

The men's team will hit the road next weekend for two meets, swimming at Grand Valley State University Friday at 5 p.m. and then at Valparaiso Saturday at 3 p.m.
