MACOMB, Ill. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team won 12 of 13 events Saturday afternoon to hand Western Illinois University a 181-49 defeat at Brophy Hall. The Panthers have now won a season-best four consecutive dual meets and won for the eighth consecutive time in the series with the Leathernecks.
Sophomore Jake Koll won twice to lead the way, while juniors Jake Kalinowski, sophomores Kyle Trelka, Evan Green, Brady Huemann and Jordan Diel and freshman Nathan Welchlin, Zachary Kraai and Brian Verink all provided UWM with individual victories. In addition, the 400 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams came out on top as well. The only event the team did not win was the 200 freestyle.
"This was just a really solid meet for us," UWM head coach Erica Janssen said. "Nathan Welchlin and Jake Kalinowski both had strong days, but, overall, I felt like there was nothing extremely fantastic. But, it sets us up well for next weekend."
Koll won both diving events, while the 200 free relay team of Trelka, Welchlin, freshman Mike Schalla and Kalinowski won the final race of the night, touching the wall in 1:25.18 to set a pool record.
Kalinowski sprinted to a win in the 50 freestyle, edging Welchlin's runner-up 21.83 with a clocking of 21.55 of his own.
Trelka led a 1-2-3 UWM finish in the 200 backstroke, winning in 1:56.22. Junior Matt Kluczinske was second in 1:57.76, while senior Jeremy Waldhart was third in 1:59.02.
Green won the 400 IM in a time of 4:14.40, with Huemann right behind in 4:18.04. Huemann also claimed the victory in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.46, with Waldhart close behind in second at 2:15.74.
Diel led another top-three effort for Milwaukee in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in a winning time of 1:55.91. Second was sophomore Nathan Rahe (1:57.73), while classmate Sky Boggio was third (1:57.86) in a touch-out.
Welchlin continued his impressive freshman campaign, beating Kalinowski in the 100 freestyle, 46.87 to 47.37.
Kraai led the way in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:53.19, with Verink second (4:55.00) and freshman Ryan Goggans third (4:55.81). Verink also claimed the victory in the 1650 freestyle in 16:25.11.
The other winner was the 400 medley relay squad of Trelka, Huemann, Diel and Schalla, opening the meet with a win in 3:30.11.
The team will conclude the regular season with its final home meet of the year, hosting Green Bay at 1 p.m. Feb. 6. That meet will also serve as "Senior Day" for the Panthers.
