CHICAGO, Ill. -
Four different members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team won multiple events to lead the team to a 206-94 victory over the University of Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Ratner Athletics Center. The Panthers (5-5) handed the Maroons (5-1) their first dual loss of the season, winning 14 of 15 events on the day.
Sophomore Kyle Trelka and freshman Nathan Welchlin each won three events, while sophomores Brady Huemann and Jake Koll each added a pair to lead the way.
"We haven't competed for over a month and a half, so I am extremely pleased with the results," UWM head coach Erica Janssen. "A lot of different people stood out and we performed extremely well. We set a lot of personal-bests today, which was good to see especially after how hard we have been training. The whole team just really performed well today and I could not be more pleased."
Trelka won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.20, the 50 freestyle in 22.05 and the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:55.75. Welchlin picked up right where he left last semester, topping the field in the 200 butterfly in 1:53.02, the 100 freestyle in 46.99 and the 100 fly in a time of 51.92.
Huemann claimed individual victories in the 100 breaststroke (59.34) and in the 200 breast (2:09.04).
Koll had a great afternoon, winning both diving events and setting a pool record in the process. He broke the pool mark of 262.40 on the three-meter board with a point total of 303.85, which was also a career-best. He added a victory on the one-meter with 245.80 points. UWM dominated the diving events, as sophomore Shane Conner was second on both.
Other winners for Milwaukee included freshman Brian Verink in the 1000 freestyle (9:45.67), touching the wall in a season-best time for the team. Senior Jeremy Waldhart won the 100 backstroke (53.59) and freshman Cris Smith topped the field in the 500 freestyle (4:46.72).
The Panthers did very well in 1000, taking the top three spots. In addition to Verink, Smith was second in 10:05.71 and freshman Ryan Goggans was third in 10:07.10. The 200 fly was another 1-2-3 event for UWM, as sophomore Nathan Green was second in 1:55.70 and sophomore Nathan Rahe third in 1:56.19. Lastly, Verink placed second behind Smith in the 500 in 4:50.83, with freshman Brady Garner third in 4:54.01.
The 200 medley relay team led off the meet with a victory in 1:35.03, while the 400 free relay team was the only event in which UWM was not a winner.
The team has one road trip remaining in the regular season, as it will head south to take on Western Illinois, January 30 at 3 p.m.
