MADISON, Wis. - Junior Kelsey George and sophomore Sarah Wardecke each won an event to pace the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team Friday night in its season opener. In the end, the University of Wisconsin claimed the non-conference dual victory by a score of 157-85.

George capped a nice night on the diving boards with a win on the three-meter board after taking third place on the one-meter. She recorded point totals of 294.08 on the three and 234.83 on the one.

Wardecke claimed a victory in the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.53 and also took second in the 100 free, touching the wall in 53.01.

"I was pretty happy with where we were at tonight," Milwaukee head coach Erica Janssen said. "We have been working really hard in training and are a little better than where we were at last season in the opener. To win two events against a strong Big Ten team is a nice start. We were right in there in every race and the kids stepped up to the challenge."

Junior Danielle Wenger added solid contributions with a second place showing in the 1000 free (10:19.03) and a third-place finish in the 500 free (5:10.34).

Freshman Maggi Beck nearly claimed a win in her first-ever race, taking second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 59.78, just seven-tenths of a second behind the winning time of 59.07.

Other second-place finishes were recorded by senior Kerry Rossow and freshman Aubrey Griffiths. Rossow was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.70 and Griffiths took second on the one-meter diving board with 250.13 points.

The women's team will take a small break but jump right back into competition against the Big Ten. Milwaukee will head to Iowa City, Iowa, Oct. 23 to take on both Iowa and Michigan State in a meet starting at 4 p.m.
