MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Chase Gravengood won three events and freshman Robby Leibold won twice as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team came back to earn a 150-150 tie against the University of Illinois at Chicago Saturday at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers earned the tie on the strength of a one-two-three finish in the 400 individual medley, the second-to-last event of the day. Gravengood won the event in a time of 4:13.19, while Leibold was second at 4:15.45 and sophomore Jeremy Seibel third in a time of 4:18.63. The squad had to finish 1-2-3 in the 400 IM to make it a meet and did just that.

"In talking with Paul [UIC head coach Paul Moniak] earlier this week, we knew it was going to be close and either team could win," Milwaukee head coach Dave Clark said. "As it turns out, either team did."

Gravengood added a season-best time of 1:55.33 to win the 200 fly and also won the 100 fly in a time of 51:39, just off his career-best of 51.23.

Leibold recorded victories in the 1000 free in a time of 9:52.71 and the 500 free in a time of 4:47.60. His time in the 500 free was a season-best. Freshman teammate David Adams placed second in both events.

"Chase swam consistently well with three big wins," Clark said. "Leibold was also a key with two big wins and a second-place showing for us."

Senior Jeff Jasinowski paced the UWM divers at the meet, placing first in the three-meter event with 285.68 points and finishing second on the one-meter board with a score of 270.45. Both scores represented season-bests for Jasinowski.

Sophomore Tyler Jefferson was also a winner for Milwaukee, taking first in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:00.36. In addition, he placed second in the 100 back, touching the wall in 54.52.

Sophomore Jeremy Seibel contributed with second-place showings in the 200 free (1:46.50) and 200 breast (2:16.64) against the Flames.

"Both teams swam hard, both teams swam well and at the end we came out even," Clark said. "I don't know if there is anything either one of us could have done to make it any different."

The tie is just the second for Clark, who now has a career record of 103-62-2 in his 15 years as the UWM men's coach.

The Panthers have a week off to prepare for North Dakota, who they host next Saturday at the Klotsche Center. The teams will hit the pool starting at 1:30 p.m.
