Panthers Claim Wins Over Valpo, South Dakota State

MILWAUKEE - Chase Gravengood won two events and Jeff Jasinowski swept the diving events for the second-straight day to pace the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team to a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers beat South Dakota State, 132-92, and downed Valparaiso, 141-78.

"The team really did a lot of good things today," UWM head coach Dave Clark said. "We were very good most of the day and some individuals really stepped up with some good performances for us."

Gravengood led a strong UWM finish in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. In the 200, Gravewood claimed first with a time of 1:45.49, with Robby Leibold finishing third and David Adams taking fourth. Then, in the 100, Gravengood won the race in a time of 48.14 to lead a group of four Panthers at the front of the race. Tyler Jefferson finished second, Jeremy Seibel claimed third and David Yugo came home in fourth.

Jasinowski, who has been stellar all season long, won the one-meter diving event with 317.25 points and the three-meter event with 308.63 points. He also met the NCAA Zone qualifying standard in the one-meter for the first time this season.

Other winners on the day for the Panthers included Joe Vermeulen, who won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:22.28. Also, Matt Howard won the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 55.89.

The Panthers also claimed a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Howard, Tom Heitkamp, Andy Barborich and Tim Watt rolled to the win in 1:39.43. Plus, Barborich and Leibold scored points for UWM in the 100-yard butterfly, with Barborich claiming second and Leibold third.

UWM returns to action next weekend at the Ball State Invitational.
