MILWAUKEE - Senior Jeff Jasinowski and the UWM 400 free relay team both earned first-place finishes on Thursday evening to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team against Northwestern. The Panthers also recorded second-place finishes in seven events, but fell 141-93 in their home opener at the Klotsche Center.

Northwestern is the third-straight Big Ten team that Milwaukee has faced to start the 2005-06 season. They enter the new season ranked No. 13 and return all 23 All-America honors they earned last season in finishing eighth nationally.

"I told the team we have three seasons," UWM head coach Dave Clark said. "We have a Big Ten season, a regular season and a postseason. For better or worse, our Big Ten season is over and we raced it very well."

Jasinowski won the three-meter diving event with 285.45 points and also finished second on the one-meter board.

The 400 free relay team comprised of seniors Kyle Fyock and Tim Watt and sophomores Chase Gravengood and Tyler Jefferson continued their hot start to the season, edging Northwestern by the slimmest of margins with a time of 3:14.09. The Wildcats recorded a time of 3:14.34.

"Just like last week, the 400 free relay was absolutely awesome," Clark said. "They are posting times they were doing in the middle of February last season. It was a very nice way to end the meet. We've now beaten Big Ten teams in this event two out of three times."

Gravengood had one of the team's seven second-place finishes, finishing the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:56.29. He also placed third in the 200 IM in a time of 1:57.74.

Fyock and Watt both narrowly missed victories, as Fyock swam the 50 free in a time of 22.18, just .06 behind Northwestern's Jon Ehret's time of 22.12. Watt also had a close finish, touching the wall in 49.43 in the 100 free, getting edged out by Ehret again, who recorded a winning time of 48.55.

Other second-place finishers for the Panthers included freshman David Adams in the 1000 free, senior Ryan Frohmader in the 200 backstroke and sophomore Jeremy Seibel in the 500 free. In fact, UWM had three of the top four finishers in the 500 free, as freshman Robby Leibold placed third and Adams finished fourth.

"Northwestern is a tough team to beat and we raced them very well event-for-event," Clark said.

Milwaukee continues a busy weekend in the pool on Sunday, with the team splitting up for the Northwestern Relays and the UIC Diving Invitational.
