MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
Seniors Michael Belting and Adam Steffes combined for three wins, to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team to a Senior Day victory over Western Illinois University, 130-98, in dual meet action Saturday at the Klotsche Center. It was the final home meet for Belting, Steffes, John Batty, Andy Davis and Carey Kammel.
"We swam very solidly today," head coach Dave Clark said. "Start to finish, we didn't make many mistakes to allow (Western Illinois) to get back into the meet."
Belting was victorious in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events, leading teammates in the next three positions on the 200. That that event, Belting touched the wall in 1:44.91, as juniors Ryan Frohmader (1:48.76) and Tim Watt (1:49.66) occupied second and third. Freshman David Yugo finished fourth in the event, and came back to take third in the 500 free (5:01.76), behind Belting's top time of 4:45.27.
In diving, junior Jeff Jasinowski won the one-meter event, netting a zone-qualifying mark of 320.92. He also posted the top score from the three-meter board, scoring 255.53 points.
"(Getting a zone qualifier) is well-deserved for Jeff," Clark said. "He is an excellent worker day in and day out, doing what he needs to do. He dove very well today. (One-meter) is not an easy qualifier to get."
Steffes took top honors in the 100 free, posting a time of 48.84, while Watt was third in 49.28. The senior Madison, Wis., native also competed with the winning 200 medley relay, that comprised of sophomore Matt Howard and freshmen Chase Gravengood and Tom Heitkamp. The quartet posted a time of 1:39.51. Gravengood added a pair of second-place finishes individually, finishing the 400 individual medley in 4:15.45 and the 100 backstroke in 55.67. Frohmader was third in the 100 back, finishing the event in 56.03.
"It wasn't necessarily the people that won the events for us today, but the second-place people that really stepped up for us today," Clark said. "People like Andy Davis (in the 50 free) really stepped up for us today."
Freshman Tyler Jefferson rounded out the Milwaukee winners, pacing the field of the 50 freestyle. He touched the wall in 22.82, just ahead of Davis in second in 22.92.
Sophomore Karl Winderl led the Panthers in a hotly-contested 1000 free. He placed second in 10:19.54, just 0.19 seconds off the lead time and 0.20 seconds ahead of junior Joe Vermeulen in third (10:19.74).
Milwaukee returns to action on the road, but will not have to travel far, heading to Green Bay, Wis., next Saturday (Feb. 5) for a dual meet with in-state and league rival UW-Green Bay.
