Men's Swimming & Diving Remains Perfect Against Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team won eight events, including two by both freshman Chase Gravengood and junior Jeff Jasinowski, in topping Valparaiso University, 141-87, in dual meet action Sunday afternoon in Valparaiso, Ind. The Panthers move to 3-3 on the season with the dual meet win, and have won all 11 dual meets in the two teams' series history.

"This was our first real meet since December," head coach Dave Clark said. "Everyone got got workouts and worked on their racing. It was a good week to get the bugs out."

Gravengood continued an outstanding freshman campaign, picking up wins in both the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. In the 200 free he posted a time of 1:47.16 while classmate Tyler Jefferson finished third in the event in 1:49.28. He was joined by senior Carey Kammel in the 200 fly, winning in 2:01.23, ahead of Kammel in 2:11.96..

Jefferson earned a win of his own, topping the field of the 200 backstroke. He finished in 2:00.74, edging Bittner in second with a time of 2:02.62. Keeping with the freshman theme, Tom Heitkamp took top honors in the 50 free in 23.11, ahead of second-place freshman Dan Lawrence in 23.34.

"Alot of our guys had good swims and were consistent," Clark said. "(Our whole team) did well throughout. Any event we did not win, were were two and three or in some events fourth as well.

Junior Ryan Frohmader put together an excellent meet of his own, winning the 100 free and taking second in the 200 individual medley. His time of 48.89 in the 100 free was followed by Heitkamp in third with a time of 53.33. The 200 IM saw Frohmader place second in 2:00.84, ahead of Bittner in third (2:07.28).

Jasinowski picked up wins in both diving events. From the one-meter board he narrowly missed a zone qualifier with his score of 296.15. He came back to post 246.70 points to win the three-meter event.

Milwaukee winners were rounded out by junior Joe Vermeulen in the 1000 free, the first of three Panthers atop the field. After Vermeulen finished in 10:37.97, sophomores Paul Lewis finished second in 10:46.53 and Jason Schiessl took third in 10:46.53. UWM was also successful in the other distance event, the 500 free, where freshman David Yugo took second in 5:08.22, ahead of Lewis in third with a time of 5:14.66.

"We are looking forward to tough competition this weekend at the Bill Ritter Invitational," Clark said. "There will be some tough teams there."

The Panthers return home next weekend (Jan. 21-22) for just their second home meet of the season when the Klotsche Center plays home to the Bill Ritter Invitational.
