The third day of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships is in full swing as the morning's preliminary round has set the table for the night's finals. For the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimming team, the Panthers have qualified at least one athlete to continue on in Friday night's finals.
Kicking things off, Kari Kinney finished fifth (4:39.78) in the 400-yard individual medley to advance to the finals. Danielle Bradley (4:44.26) and Patricia Frank (4:45.13) qualified to move on for the consolation championship. The men qualified Justin O'Keefe (4:17.87), Carey Kammel (4:21.46) and Joe Vermeulen (4:23.90) for the consolation round of the 400 IM. In the 100-yard butterfly Julie Olson placed seventh (59.16) and Rob Vergeer placed eighth (50.53) to qualify for the finals. Heather Sawatzki (59.62), Breanna Ballweg (1:00.15) and Matt Howard (52.69) will swim for the Panthers in the consolation championship for their event.
As the 200-yard freestyle concluded, Tim Watt (1:44.20) and Josh Baseheart (1:44.27) each qualified for the finals by finishing sixth and seventh. John Batty (1:47.25) will appear in the consolations. For the women, Jen Kedinger (1:56.05) placed seventh overall to advance to the finals in the 200-yard freestyle. Sarah Valley (1:57.84) and Bridget Fargen (1:59.60) will compete in the consolation championships.
Rounding out the morning's events, Lindsay and Sarah Caldwell each qualified for the finals in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lindsay (1:06.39) finished third while her older sister Sarah (1:08.23) finished eighth to close out the list of available qualifiers. Kyle Fyock (58.59) will appear for the men in the 100-yard breaststroke finals after finishing fifth. Ben Creydt (1:03.15) and Kyle Crow (1:03.22) will compete in the consolation championships for the Panthers. In the 100-yard backstroke, Julie Olson (58.90) finished the day's qualifying round by finishing third to advance to the finals. Emily Holcomb (1:00.39) will advance to the consolation championships for the women while Matt Howard (53.49) and Ryan Frohmader (53.65) will compete for the men's consolation championship.
The meet will fire back up at 3 p.m. for the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter diving preliminary round. Finals from the morning's swimming session will start at 6 p.m. with the women's 400 IM finals to lead things off.
