CHICAGO, Ill. -
Senior Michael Belting won three individual events as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team fell to the University of Illinois at Chicago, 190-109, in dual meet action Saturday afternoon in Chicago. A team captain, Belting has now won his last seven individual events, while the Panthers move to 2-3 in dual meets on the season.
"We had some flashes of brilliance from some people," head coach Dave Clark said. "We were just not as consistant as I would have liked us to be."
Belting swam to first-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle and 200 free in back-to-back events, and came back to top the field in the 500 free. In the 1000 free, he posted a time of 10:06.49 to finish ahead of freshman Jeremy Seibel in second. He then touched the wall in 1:45.93 in the 200 free and completed the 500 free in 4:47.48.
"Michael won three events for us tonight, including back-to-back in the 1000 and 200 free," Clark said. "That is a tough double (to accomplish). He is one of our team leaders and consistant performers. He rarely has a bad day.
Seibel also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.18, while sophomore Kyle Palmer just missed a lifetime best in finishing third at 2:19.85.
Also winning an event for the Panther swimmers was freshman Chase Gravengood. The Oconomowoc, Wis. native continued an impressive rookie campaign, winning the 200 butterfly and finishing second in both the 100 fly and 400 individual medley. He posted times of 1:58.21 and 52.47 in the 200 and 100 fly events, respectively, and finished the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.65.
In diving events, junior Jeff Jasinowski was the top finisher for Milwaukee. From the three-meter board he posted a score of 276.38 to win the event. Earlier in the evening Jasinowski placed second in one-meter diving with a score of 262.58.
"Jeff was another one that stepped up tonight," Clark said. "He was consistant from both boards, just missing zone qualifiers on both. He is really starting to come around."
Junior Kyle Fyock added another second-place finish for UWM, while freshman Tyler Jefferson and senior Adam Steffes combined for three third-place finishes on the day. Fyock was second in the 100 breast (1:02.57) and Jefferson was third in the 200 backstroke (2:02.98), while Steffes was third in both the 50 (22.21) and 100 free (49.24).
Milwaukee has next weekend off before returning to the pool at the Ball State Invitational, Nov. 19-20, in Muncie, Ind.
