EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
The UWM baseball team scored seven runs in the final three innings - including five in the top of the ninth - then held off a late Evansville rally to claim a 9-8 win Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (1-5) scored twice in the top of the seventh to close to within 5-4, then broke free for five runs in the ninth. In the seventh, Matt Houk and Darin Haugom had RBI's, while John Vandenberg had a key, two-run single in the ninth.
Reliever Matt Freisleben (1-0) earned the victory. Closer Eric Goerdt earned the save despite giving up a three-run home run to Vince Serafini. All three runs were unearned.
Panther starter Quintin Oldenburg pitched the first seven-plus innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. Vandenberg had three hits, including his third home run of the season, and three RBI's for UWM. Haugom also had three hits, while Houk, Goerdt, and Steve Guden had two hits apiece.
UWM returns to action next Saturday, opening its spring trip to Homestead, Fla., with games against Stony Brook (N.Y.) and St. Francis (N.Y.).
