April 30, 2025

MILWAUKEE- Gunnar Seversen of the Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team capped an incredible freshman campaign by being named Horizon League Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday.

Seversen had already won Freshman of the Meet at the league championships, where he finished runner-up in the 1650 freestyle, fourth in the 500 freestyle, and fifth in the 400 individual medley.

Seversen's times in both the 1650 (15:26.51) and 500 (4:25.18) freestyles were school records, and his 400 IM (3:53.48) time was a new program freshman best. He was also part of the 800 freestyle relay team that set a new program record at 6:32.60, as well as new a Klotsche Center record of 6:41.82 against Green Bay.

Opening his colligate career back on Oct. 19 at the Wisconsin Showcase, Seversen hit the ground running, winning both the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley. He finished first in at least one event in four of the team's five dual meets, and had two victories against Green Bay and Stevens Point.

Seversen is the first Panther to win the award since Kenny Stelpflug earned the honor back in 2012. He's also the first Milwaukee athlete to receive a postseason award since K.J Heger was named Diver of the Meet at the league championships in 2015.
