DAYTON, Ohio – After trailing 7-2 late in the game, the Milwaukee baseball team evened the score at seven with a five-run eighth inning. However, the Wright State Raiders answered back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to even the series at a game apiece following a 14-7 win.
Â
Milwaukee's corner infielders led the way as
Justin Hausser and
Tristan Ellis had two RBIs apiece.
Caden Headlee had a three-hit afternoon, while
Teige Lethert added a pair of doubles and
Gabe Roessler drew four walks.
Â
"The game started as a tight fought baseball game and then kind of exploded late," said head coach
Shaun Wegner. "
Aric Ehmke battled for us to start and ultimately our bullpen was unable to hold the line."
Â
Wright State scored first with a run on Ehmke in the second, but the Panthers responded with a run in the third on a base hit by Headlee. MKE took its only lead of the game at 2-1 with an RBI single by Ellis in the top of the fourth.
Â
The Raiders regained the advantage with two in the bottom of the fourth and added two more runs each in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-2 lead.
Â
In the top of the eighth, Headlee opened with an infield single before
Q Phillips and
Thomas Otto walked to load the bases. Headlee scored on an error, while Ellis plated another run with a base hit. A wild pitch allowed Otto to score ahead of a clutch two-run game-tying double by Hausser to knot the score at seven.
Â
"Offensively, that eighth inning was a hard-fought scoring frame, but we left far too many runners on and had plenty of opportunities on base," noted Wegner. "We needed to push far more across the plate."
Â
The bottom half of the eighth saw the Raiders storm right back with seven runs on seven hits and an error to gain their largest lead of the game at 14-7.
Tyler Andrews was charged with three runs in the lopsided inning off the heels of a solid effort in the seventh.
Â
"Andrews did a solid job and matured on the mound in front of our eyes," Wegner added. "I probably left him in a batter too long, so the results don't look as good for him."
Â
Wright State had three home runs and seven doubles in the game, led by a 4-for-4 effort by Braylen Blomquist. Patrick Fultz and Luke Arnold led the Raider offense with three RBIs apiece.
Â
Max Whitesell improved to 3-0 on the season as he pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit and struck out all four of the outs that he retired.
Â
Milwaukee and Wright State will play the third game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. (CT).
