INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced its 2024 baseball individual awards and All-League selections on Tuesday in advance of the 2024 Horizon League Baseball Championship.
Â
Earning All-League honors were outfielder
Carson Hansen and starting pitcher
Luke Hansel on first team, while designated hitter
Sean Tillmon and starting pitcher
Adrian Montilva earned spots on second team.
Â
The league also announced its first-ever sportsmanship award, with Panther outfielder
Dallan Quigley selected as the nominee representing Milwaukee.
Â
One of the top hitters in the Horizon League in 2024, Hansen hit a league-leading 25 doubles, and coupled his 11 home runs for a .619 slugging percentage, which was just outside the top-10 within the league. He led the Panthers with 62 RBIs on the year equaling his number of hits with 62 in 194 at bats for a .320 batting average overall.
Â
In league games, the three-time Horizon League Batter of the Week stepped his game up and had a .383 batting average over his 30 conference games with 45 of his 62 RBIs coming in league play. Nine of his 11 home runs, and 15 of his doubles also game in league action, as he finished the league season fifth in batting average (.383), second in slugging (.748), eighth in on-base percentage (.467), and fourth in OPS (1.215).
Â
His 45 RBIs led all players in league games, while his 36 RBIs and 15 doubles were second in Horizon action. His nine home runs were tied for third most over the league slate.
Â
Hansen became Milwaukee's first outfielder to earn first-team accolades since 2016, when
Luke Meeteer was a first teamer.
Â
Hansel was elevated to the team's top starter in 2024 and answered the call as he was selected as one of the Horizon League's top arms. This season in 14 starts, Hansel led the Panthers with 82 1/3 innings and 78 strikeouts, while finishing the year tied for the team lead with three wins while posting a team-leading 3.61 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP, and earned Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honors once this year in the middle of April.
Â
Among qualifying pitchers in the Horizon League, Hansel was a top-two pitcher in ERA, innings pitched, and strikeouts, while also finishing just one percentage point from the top spot in opponents' batting average as he finished the year allowing a .224 average to opponents. Fifty-five of his 78 strikeouts came in league games, which was fourth-most in conference games among pitchers in the league.
Â
Hansel becomes the first Panther full-time starting pitcher to earn a spot on the top team since
Austin Schulfer earned first team honors in 2018.
Â
Tillmon, in his first season with the Panthers, put together a solid campaign with the Black & Gold as he hit .312 on the year with nine doubles, and 30 RBIs. He started in all 50 of his appearances on the year with 62 hits including 35 of those coming in Horizon League play. Tillmon also led the Panthers with three triples in league games.
Â
Tillmon earns Milwaukee's first designated hitter/flex all-league honors since
Oakland Scanlan was on the second team in 2019.
Â
In his second season with Milwaukee, Montilva was an asset among the Panther weekend starting rotation in 2024, after serving as a reliever for the majority of the 2023 campaign. On the year he made 14 starts and was second on the team with both 61 1/3 innings and 71 strikeouts, while posting a two-win season with a 1.60 WHIP and a 5.43 earned run average.
Â
He was fourth in the league among qualifying pitchers in earned run average and was also fourth with an opponents' batting average of .266. His 71 strikeouts led all left-handed pitchers, while he was in the top-five in the league in strikeouts looking with 20 this year.
Â
Montilva's spot on the second team give Milwaukee five-straight seasons with a pitcher on the second squad as the Panther left-hander joins former teammate
Riley Frey (2021, 2022, 2023), and
Jared Reklaitis (2019).
Â
Earning the Horizon League Player of the Year honors was Liam McFadden-Ackman of Northern Kentucky, while Brandon Decker of Oakland was named Pitcher of the Year, and Kevin Fee of Purdue Fort Wayne was selected as Reliever of the Year.
Â
This year's Freshman of the Year went to outfielder Alejandro Covas of Youngstown State, while infielder Jacob Walker of Purdue Fort Wayne won the inaugural Sportsmanship Award. Head Coach Dizzy Peyton of Northern Kentucky, and Wright State skipper Alex Sogard were named Co-Head Coach of the Year as voted on by their peers.
