Kortnie Volk Takes Heptathlon Crown at Gibson Invitational

April 19, 2024

TERRE HAUTE – Kortnie Volk won the heptathlon, jumping from fifth to first on the second day of competition, as the Milwaukee track & field program competed at the Gibson Invitational today.

Kortnie Volk ended yesterday in fifth place in the heptathlon, collecting 2740 points through the first four events. She then opened the Friday events with a win in the long jump at 5.61m (18'5"). After that, she took third in the javelin throw with a distance of 28.62m (93'10"). Then, to close the heptathlon events, she won the 800m run in 2:24.19. Her Friday performances got her total score to 4690, which puts her at sixth on Milwaukee's all-time list.

Following in second and third were Anna Szepieniec and Kortnie's younger sister Kallie Volk, scoring 4661 and 4581, respectively. Their scores put them at seventh and eighth on the all-time list.

"Day two of the multis had a lot of positive results for the men and the women," head coach Andrew Basler said. "With the women, we had three freshmen do their first heptathlon, so any results we got were learning opportunities."

"Anna (Szepieniec) had some big fouls in the long jump portion that would have had her close to 4900 points. Kortnie (Volk) had a solid day two to set a lifetime best and has a lot of confidence now two weeks out from conference."

Tony Bretall was the lone Panther on the men's side to complete every decathlon event, finishing in sixth place with 5963 points. Jack Misky and Liam Richards both turned in DNF's as they did not compete in the 1500m run.

"On the men's side, we didn't go all out this weekend due to conference being two weeks away," Basler continued. "We strategically got through portions of the decathlon to give the guys the feel of moving from event to event. That's why we didn't have all the guys run and finish the 1500m."

Cailin Kinas was the lone Milwaukee runner to grab a spot in the top five, taking third in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:11.86.

Samantha Satterfield and Finnegan Shields were the top performers for Milwaukee in the hammer throw, both grabbing sixth.

"In the hammer throw, I thought the marks were solid across the board. I'm excited to see the results from the rings tomorrow in shot put and discus."

Tomorrow's events at the Gibson Invitational are scheduled to kick off at 10:30 AM, while the Green & White Invite is scheduled for a 9 AM start in Milwaukee.
