MILWAUKEE –
Nate Griepentrog won the mile run and added his name into the Milwaukee record books as the Panthers competed at the eleventh annual Tierney Classic today at the Klotsche Center.
Griepentrog recorded a time of 4:12.85 to win the event and add his name to the record books, taking the tenth spot away from former teammate
Trevor Wenzel. The senior distance runner was joined on the podium by
Carter Eckhoff, who recorded a second-place time of 4:13.43. The pair now rank second and third in the conference for the event.
Collin Schulz led a Milwaukee sweep of the top four spots in the high jump, placing first with a height of 1.95m (6'4.75"). Schulz was followed by
Chris Dobbie,
Jack Misky, and
Liam Richards.
Evan Bartelsen dominated the pole vault, winning by over 18 inches with a height of 4.85m (15'11"). Bartelsen now ranks fourth in the conference for pole vault.
"Overall, there were a lot of improved performances across all the event areas," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "Evan had a great day today in the pole vault. He keeps pushing through bigger poles which is a great sign of what's to come. Nate a great day in the mile. He stuck with the rabbit and was able to break into Milwaukee's top ten."
Will Mortimer won the triple jump with a mark of 14.46m (47'5.25") and was joined on the podium by Dobbie who finished third. Mortimer now sits at third in the conference.
The Panthers swept the top five spots in the long jump, led by
Anthony Campbell who leaped 7.43m (24'4.5"). Campbell was followed by Mortimer,
Alexander Maggit, Austin Villareal, and
Tim Maidment. Campbell tops the Horizon League in the event and is top 40 in the country.
Dane Nelson topped the podium in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 8.19 seconds, just 0.01 ahead of teammate
Chris Hudnall.
Ethan Criter joined them on the podium in third with a time of 9.25 seconds.
Golden Cotton won the 60m dash with a time of 6.80 seconds and was joined on the podium by
Anthony Kessler, who recorded a third-place time of 7.00 seconds.
Cotton also won the 200m dash, where Milwaukee swept the top six spots. Cotton, with a time of 22.33 seconds, was joined on the podium by
Jackson Statz and
Zac Schmidt.
Lucas Picco and
Harper Fahey took the top two spots in the 800m run, finishing in 1:56.74 and 1:58.09. The pair of freshmen now sit at second and seventh in the conference.
In the 4x400m relay, Milwaukee took first and third, with the team consisting of
Dane Nelson,
Caleb Henry,
Zach Weitgenant, and Schmidt topping the field in a time of 3:22.20. Milwaukee's third-place team was made up of Griepentrog, Picco, Fahey, and
Dylan Longworth.
Aiden Janke placed second in the shot put with a throw of 13.27m (43'6.5"), and Criter finished third in the 400m dash with a time of 54.07 seconds.
"There is always something special about competing at home for the Tierney Classic," Basler said. "We have so many alumni and family attend this meet, as well as having our senior recognition. This year we honored 26 seniors who have poured so much into our program. I couldn't be more proud to have them as Panthers."
The Panthers' next competition comes January 26
th and 27
th at the Illini Challenge, hosted by the University of Illinois.
