Milwaukee Men’s Basketball Unveils Non-Conference Schedule

Slate includes stops at Providence and Colorado

September 13, 2023

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee men's basketball program announced its 2023-24 non-conference schedule today, featuring road contests at Providence, Colorado, and the "Sunshine Slam" in Florida, as well as five home games highlighted by visits from Southern Mississippi and Chattanooga.

"We are excited to announce the schedule for the 2023-24 season," head coach Bart Lundy said. "We have a slate of tough home games including two 20-win NCAA Division I teams. Chattanooga played in the Southern Conference Championship a year ago, Southern Miss was the Sun Belt Conference regular-season champs, and Longwood won 20 games for the second straight season."

The Panthers will take on four different teams that made the postseason a year ago, as well as four other opponents that are coming off successful campaigns in which they won 18 or more games.

"Our away games will take us coast to coast," Lundy said. "We will be tested early on the road at Providence and Colorado and then travel down to Florida for the Sunshine Slam. We follow that up with a road swing to St Thomas and out west to UC-Davis. And then mixed in the non-conference will be a road trip to Green Bay for our first Horizon League test."

Game times and broadcast information will be announced at a later date.

"Though not what I envisioned for our schedule, we believe it is demanding and balanced," Lundy said. "We won 20 games last season and have a good core of returners coming back, so as a mid-major program that puts us in a difficult scheduling position. To get games for this season, especially here in Milwaukee, was a monumental task. I'd like to commend Mike Winans for his daily grind with scheduling. He was told 'no' many, many times."

The Panthers kick off the new campaign at home, tipping off the season by hosting Stout November 6.

"We hope the fans will recognize that scheduling trouble is a good sign for the program and continue to buy up those tickets," Lundy added. "Our goal was to play in front of them as many times as possible."

A challenging road trip then comes next, set to battle a Providence program Nov. 11 that went 21-12 last winter and played in the NCAA Tournament.

That will be followed quickly by a trip back across the country to battle a Colorado squad that won 18 games and played in the NIT a year ago.

The team then returns to Wisconsin for homecoming, welcoming Luther College to UWM Panther Arena Nov. 17.

The Thanksgiving week will be a busy one, with the team heading to Florida to participate in the "Sunshine Slam" multi-team event. The first game will be an interesting one, matching the Panthers up with a Stetson squad that they played against in the CBI last March. That game will be played Nov. 20, with a second game on Nov. 21 coming against either Siena (17-15 a year ago) or Central Michigan.

It's back home for a fourth game in just eight days, welcoming Southern Mississippi downtown for a matchup with a Golden Eagles squad that went 25-8 last winter, claiming the Sun Belt regular-season title as well as a spot in the NIT for the postseason.

A pair of road games opens December, traveling to St. Thomas Dec. 6, followed by a flight to California to take on UC Davis. The Tommies posted an impressive 19-14 record last year and the contest in California, a return game from last season, will see the Panthers take on an Aggie squad that went 18-14.

A pair of home games wraps the non-league slate, starting by hosting Longwood Dec. 13. The Lancers were the No. 2 seed in the Big South after going 12-6 in league play, part of a 20-12 campaign last season.

The final game is Chattanooga Dec. 22, a program that won 18 games last season in playing all the way to the Southern Conference Tournament Championship.
