SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Late Wednesday evening, the Milwaukee men's track & field team had three student-athletes compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium in Northern California.
Â
The Panthers' three qualifiers took part in the long jump and the 200m dash, with
Anthony Campbell and
Austin Wallace entered in the long jump and
Golden Cotton competing in the 200m dash.
Â
"Obviously, these were not the results we were looking for, but not because of lack of effort," said head coach
Andrew Basler. "All three guys had a great season and finished with important experience at an NCAA meet. This experience will only help them next year when they return."
Â
Campbell started strong in the long jump with a 7.28-meter attempt on his first jump of the evening but fouled his next two jumps and finished 35th at the event.
Â
Wallace fouled his first two jumps but was able to record a distance in his third and final attempt of the night with a 7.30-meter jump. Wallace finished in 32nd position.
Â
"The entire field in the long jump was jumping below expectations, the shifting wind made it hard to have consistency at the board," Basler added. "Austin and Anthony put marks out there that would have punched their ticket to NCAA, but unfortunately fouled them."
Cotton was in the third of six heats of the 200m dash qualifiers and crossed the finish line with a time of 21.51.
Â
"Golden ran a great first half," Basler noted. "Off the curve, he lost connection with the field. In a sprint race like that where everybody is fast, so staying in the mix is important."
Milwaukee will have one more competitor at the NCAA West Preliminaries on Saturday, when
Annie Guerrero will compete in the high jump. The event is scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.
