CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – On Friday, the Milwaukee men's track & field team took part in the first day of the 2022 Gary Wieneke Memorial hosted by the University of Illinois at Demirjian Park.
The team had five second-place finishes on the day, including the quartet in the 4x100m relay posting a season-best time. Individual second-place finishers included
Dane Nelson in the 110m hurdles and
Golden Cotton in the 200m dash.
Tony Bretall had a second-place result in the javelin with
Evan Bartelsen taking second in the pole vault. Other podium spots including
Chris Hudnall in the 110m hurdles, Nelson in the 400m hurdles and
Bishop Bufford taking third in the triple jump.
The relay group trailed only host Illinois, as the Panthers clocked in at 41.17 with
Golden Cotton,
Isaac Dauffenbach,
Anthony Kessler, and
EJ Kruse pacing the way for MKE.
"Our 4x100m started off well," said head coach
Andrew Basler, "and that included a shaky handoff at one point. I know they're going to get that under 41 before the season's over."
In sprints Cotton also took second in the field of 18 in the 200m dash with his time of 21.15. "Golden ran well in the 200m dash again to follow up last week's record-breaking performance and fell just a little shy of breaking 21 again," added Basler.
Anthony Kessler with a 22.29 and
Isaac Dauffenbach at 22.30 both set career-best marks in the 200m dash.
In the 110m hurdles, Milwaukee finished with a pair on the podium as Nelson finished second with a 14.63, and Hudnall close on his heels in third place with a 15.02. Nelson also finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.62.
In the horizontal jumps,
Bishop Bufford was third in the triple jump at 13.71 meters. Meanwhile,
Will Mortimer paced Milwaukee in the long jump with a 6.48-meter jump while
Tim Maidment was close behind with a leap of 6.47 meters. Bretall also had a career-best in the long jump at 6.12 meters.
Bretall also put together a strong afternoon for Milwaukee after finishing second in the javelin with a throw of 47.87 meters.
Caleb Rogalski led Milwaukee in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 55.25 meters, as he continues to close in on his personal-best.
In the 3000m steeple chase,
Aidan Sodemann had a fifth-place finish with a time of 9:31.55.
Saturday's action will continue at the University of Illinois with competition slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile in Wisconsin, the Panthers will also be competing locally at Raabe Stadium in Wauwatosa in the Marquette Invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m. with throws.
