Eight Panthers Earn Swimming & Diving Academic Honors

Will advance to national ballot later this year

MILWAUKEE – Eight members of the Milwaukee swimming & diving teams have been named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District Swimming Team, selected by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), the organization announced today.

Giulia Guerra-Montes, Riley Melendy, Julie Rebek, and Makaila Scheiblein were all recognized on the women's side. For the men, Sam Hauke, Jared Kleczka, Jonathan Kollen, and Ben Lorenz were all honored.
 
The teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom. The awards are career-firsts for all student-athletes as a Panther.
 
Guerra-Montes, a Business and Marketing major, carries a 3.82 GPA in the classroom. A veteran member of the team who has been a consistent scorer at Horizon League meet, she placed fifth in the 400 IM, sixth in the 200 backstroke, and 14th in the 200 IM at the 2023 Horizon League Championships. Guerra-Montes has also been a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll every semester she has been eligible.
 
Melendy was the 2023 Horizon League Champion in the 100 backstroke and also placed 9th in 200 back & 16th in the 200 IM at the 2023 Horizon League Championships. A mechanical engineering major with a 3.68 GPA, Melendy has also been a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll every semester she has been eligible.
 
Rebek is a Journalism, Advertising, & Media Studies major with a 3.91 GPA who finished third on three-meter and fourth on one-meter board at the 2023 Horizon League Championships. Rebek claimed nine different individual wins over the course of the 2022-23 season and posted NCAA Zone-qualifying scores nine different time. She was also named Horizon League Diver of the Week four times this winter.
 
Scheiblein was named to the Named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team last season and is an Education major with a 3.82 GPA. The Horizon League Champion in the 200 breaststroke at the 2023 meet, she also finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 IM and has been a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll every semester eligible.

Hauke has one of the top GPA's across the department, carrying a 3.96 GPA as a Biomedical Engineering major.

Kleczka has also been tabbed for the Horizon League All-Academic Team each of the past two seasons and is a senior with a 3.85 GPA as an HR Management major. He finished second on three-meter and fourth on one-meter at the 2023 Horizon League championships – marking the fourth Top-3 finish of his career. Kleczka posted NCAA Zone-qualifying scores nine different time this past season and has qualified for the NCAA Zone meet all four years at Milwaukee. He has been named Horizon League Diver of the Week six times in his career and was named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll each semester possible.
 
Kollen is a Finance major with a 3.83 GPA. He placed 12th in the 200 free at the 2023 Horizon League Championships and has been a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll.

Lorenz, a Physics major with a 3.90 GPA, had another strong season one year removed from setting the 50 freestyle freshmen record last winter. He swam in the championship heat of the 50 free at the 2023 Horizon League Championships, placing eighth. He also scored in the 100 free (12th place).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-March.
