Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – Four players reached double figures for the Milwaukee women's basketball team as the Panthers put together a 72-61 wire-to-wire victory over Wright State on Saturday.
"We had to play heavy minutes with the top group and I thought they really stepped up," head coach
Kyle Rechlicz said. "They didn't play tired against a very high-pressured team. A lot of credit to Wright State. They are a good team. Their record doesn't show it, but they play really hard."
Milwaukee (6-8, 4-2 Horizon League) finished 19-for-22 from the free throw line including 16-for-18 in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
Megan Walstad paced the way with 18 points while
Kamy Peppler poured a career-high 17.
Kendall Nead posted her second career double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds while
Emma Wittmershaus added 11 points.
"When we can get Megan going early, it changes the whole mindset of where our team is at," Rechlicz commented. "I thought our posts played very well today and we were finding them. I thought Kamy had another stellar game at pushing the pace and finding people in transition. To see all four starters with three assists, it says a lot."
The Panthers could not have asked for a better start to the game, hitting eight of their first 10 shots for a 19-10 advantage. MKE added a free throw and doubled up the Raiders (1-15, 0-6 Horizon League) 20-10.
Things cooled down in the second quarter as defense tightened up on both ends. MKE was held to just 1-for-9 from three-point range but carried a 31-21 lead into the half.
MKE was efficient in the third, going 8-for-12 from the floor, but Wright State hung right there, hitting 53.3 percent of its shots including five three-pointers to close the gap to six with 10 minutes to play. Nead led the charge with nine points on 4-for-6 shooting.
In the fourth, the Raiders put MKE on the free throw line and the Panthers made them pay. Milwaukee sealed the win, going 16-for-18 from the charity stripe in the final period.
Walstad was unstoppable, going 6-for-9 in the paint and 6-for-6 from the line for her team-high of 18. Peppler took advantage of free throws as well, going 7-for-8 to set her new career-high of 17 points.
Milwaukee dominated the rebounds 39-19 and outscored MKE 30-22 in the paint.
The Panthers remain on the road as they next take on league-leading Cleveland State on Thursday, January 12 at 6:00 pm CT.
