Box Score FRANKLIN, Wis. – Riley Frey tossed a complete game shutout and the Milwaukee baseball team racked up 13 hits in a 7-0 win over Wright State on Thursday night.
Frey allowed just five hits while striking out seven in the nine shutout frames, throwing 130 pitches. It marks the first complete game shutout since Austin Schulfer threw nine scoreless in a 5-0 win against Youngstown State on April 21, 2018.
"Just great pitching," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "He [Frey] had command of three or four different pitches. Short of one or two walks, he was almost perfect. Overall, it was a good team win. We did a lot of good things and obviously, Riley was special."
He was brilliant from the start as the lefty faced just one batter over the minimum through six innings.
Wright State got its first hit in the third, but that runner was picked off two pitches later.
At the plate, Milwaukee wasted no time getting on the board as
Ty Olejnik singled to lead off the game and scored one batter later as
Mitchell Buban doubled down the left field line.
After a groundout moved Buban to third,
Aaron Chapman drove him in for a 2-0 advantage through one.
The Panthers tacked on two more in the fourth as
Zach Nogalski scored on a wild pitch and Benson crossed on an error to make it 4-0.
One inning later, Milwaukee loaded the bases and on the first pitch,
Jack Thelen brought everyone in to break it open and put MKE up 7-0.
"We played with momentum and anytime you get pitching like that, it's easy to stack some at bats," Doffek continued. "Thelen's triple was enormous, and the way Riley was throwing, it was going to be tough for a comeback."
All nine Panthers' batters recorded at least one hit with Olejnik's 3-for-5 day leading the way.
Tommy Benson and
Jake Novak each had two hits apiece for MKE.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Friday at 6:00 pm. It is Dog Day at Franklin Field where fans are invited to bring their furry friends to the park.
