DeYoung’s Three-Homer Day Carries MKE Past YSU

Box Score NILES, Ohio Nate DeYoung blasted three home runs as he helped the Milwaukee baseball team get back on track with a 17-13 victory at Youngstown State on Friday afternoon.

"We've been searching for someone to step up when we needed it and that's exactly what DeYoung did," head coach Scott Doffek said. "He was obviously special and even more impressive is when he did it."

As a team, the Panthers ripped five home runs.

"The whole lineup was productive today and that was very encouraging," Doffek said.

DeYoung finished the day 3-for-5 with seven RBI, the most runs driven in by a Panther since Jesse Hart drove in seven on May 22, 2008. The three homers are the most since Ben Long hit three against SIU Edwardsville on March 6, 2010.

Youngstown State (11-24, 4-7 Horizon League) got in front 5-0 before Mitchell Buban ripped a two-run homer to get on the board and DeYoung found his first for a 6-5 lead.

MKE (12-15, 3-6 Horizon League) added four in the sixth inning highlighted by DeYoung's second of the day for a 10-6 advantage.

The Penguins rallied to regain the lead in the seventh at 11-10 but DeYoung struck again in the eighth, this time a three-run blast, to put MKE on top once again.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the ninth and Conner Goodman sent one over the wall for insurance runs as MKE snapped its five-game skid.

Logan Schulfer put together the longest outing on the mound for MKE, tossing 3.1 innings. The freshman struck out four and allowed two earned runs.

"I thought Schulfer did a great job," Doffek said. "He came in and settled it down and gave us a chance to get back in that game."

Keagon Kaufmann was credited with the victory on Friday, the first of his collegiate career.

Mark Connelly reached base five times in the win, going 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of walks. He scored four runs for MKE.

Goodman finished with six RBI thanks to the grand slam and a pair of sacrifice flies.

Milwaukee and Youngstown State will wrap up the series tomorrow with first pitch from Ohio at 1:00 pm CT. Live coverage links available on MKEPanthers.com.
