Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The Milwaukee women's tennis team competed in day two of the Bulldog Classic Saturday, taking on Drake in doubles action and Creighton in singles play from the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
"Today was another great learning opportunity for us," head coach
Ryan Kucera said. "We really brought the energy again in doubles, playing as one unit with strong spirit. We had stretches where that propelled us to play confident, aggressive doubles, which is our identity. We also had moments where we didn't play the fearless tennis we are capable of, and that allowed Creighton to wrestle control at some key moments. Immense credit to them, and it was an extremely high level of tennis across the board."
A day after taking on host Drake in doubles action, this time it was an afternoon for one-on-one results. The Panthers ran into some tough competition throughout, earning victories at No. 5 (
Alice Shields topped Jyun-Yi Lee 7-5, 6-2) and No. 6 (
Anouk Ma-Ajong defeated Yana Gaskell 7-5, 6-2) singles.
"In singles, it's a similar story," Kucera said. "We showed positive signs across all 6 courts with our intangibles. Overall, we maintained positive energy and support for one another, we fought for every single point, and we were always trying to be problem solvers. If we can continue to compete with those qualities, that will pay off for us in the long run. Drake is the reigning MVC runner-ups for a reason, and they exposed some areas of growth for us technically and tactically. I don't think the scores reflect how well we competed across the board, but a great credit goes to them for their level of execution. We have identified some key areas to focus our effort tomorrow, and I am confident we will improve on those."
The Panthers battled Creighton in doubles play, but could only take one of the three matchups. That came at No. 3, with
Sara Simonova and
Babette Burgersdijk taking down Annika Elvestrom and Allison Wilcox by a score of 8-4.
Nadiia Konieva and
Giorgia Cavestro gave it a very good run, falling 8-7 (7-3).
Iva Stejskalova and Shields fell, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
