Women’s Tennis Team Adds Strong Showing At Warhawk Invite

Panthers post numerous wins in singles and doubles

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team turned in an impressive weekend at the Warhawk Fall Invite, picking up 21 singles and doubles victories over two days of competition at the Whitewater Tennis Complex.

The Panthers went 16-2 in singles action and 5-1 in doubles play overall, taking on competition against a field featuring Illinois State, Gustavus Adolphus (the No. 15 team nationally in NCAA DIII), and host Whitewater.

"The team dominated play this weekend," head coach Mark Goldin said. "We had a fun weekend and are looking forward to the Marquette Invite next weekend to wrap up fall competition."

The Panthers were particularly dominant in singles play, winning all seven of their matches on Friday before adding nine more victories on Saturday. Milwaukee also enjoyed a productive day in doubles, winning five of its six matches (doubles was held Friday only).

Natalia Castaneda Guerrero, Karolina Skowronska, Nikola Nikolajeva and Elisa Rubio each opened the weekend with convincing straight-set singles victories Friday. Valentina Vallova, Lexie Hankel and Honoka Yamashita also earned wins, with all seven Panthers dropping no more than four games in their respective matches.

Milwaukee carried that momentum into doubles play, where Nikolajeva and Rubio teamed up for a pair of victories, while Castaneda Guerrero and Skowronska also swept their two matches. Hankel and Vallova added an 8-2 win over a Whitewater pairing to close out Friday's doubles action.

The Panthers continued to find success on Saturday, combining for nine singles victories. Hankel and Nikolajeva each recorded two wins on the day, while Rubio and Yamashita also swept their respective Saturday schedules with a pair of victories apiece. Castaneda Guerrero added a straight-set win over Whitewater's Abigail Weaver before narrowly falling in a three-set battle against Gustavus Adolphus' Karina Elvestrom.

Several Panthers delivered particularly dominant performances throughout the weekend. Hankel recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Gustavus Adolphus' Bethany Smith, while Nikolajeva posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Illinois State's Ella McLeod. Rubio also surrendered just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Whitewater's Chloe Knutson, and Yamashita capped her weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Whitewater's Julia Nill.

Milwaukee's weekend included a pair of narrow three-set setbacks Saturday, as Castaneda Guerrero and Vallova each pushed their opponents to a deciding super tiebreaker before coming up just short.

The team will wrap up its fall schedule next, heading across town to the Marquette Invitational this Friday through Sunday.
