MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Emily Burns,
Mikayla Fox,
Meg Swietlik and
Trevor Wenzel of the Milwaukee cross country teams were named to the Horizon League All-Academic team, the league office announced this afternoon.
This marks Wenzel's second-straight League All-Academic Award, while it is the first career honor for Burns, Fox and Swietlik.
Sophomore
Emily Burns finished 11
th overall at the League Championships with an impressive time of 23:01.6 and helped the women's team to a 2020 league title. The second-team all-league honoree holds a perfect 4.0 GPA, and is majoring in Early Childhood Education.
Fox, a Communication and Science Disorders major, finished runner-up and contributed to the teams 2020 title. The red-shirt senior carries a 3.577 cumulative GPA. Fox finished runner-up at the league Championships with a time of 21:58.6, and marks her second time in three years the Oak Creek native finished second at the league meet. This season, Fox was also honored individually as a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Athlete.
Swietlik broke the tape in 21:33.3 in this season's league championship – the first league champion for Milwaukee since 2015, and was the first MKE female in Division I history to qualify for Nationals. She was also voted Horizon League Athlete of the Year and named to the women's All-League First Team. The Elm Grove native was also named an All-Academic Athlete by the USTFCCA. Swietlik is a Kinesiology major who carries a 3.812 cumulative GPA.
Wenzel is a Mechanical Engineering major who carries a 3.904 GPA in the classroom. This season, the Valders native helped the team to a fourth-place finish at the league Championships. He also cracked the top-10 with a sixth place finish and set a new PR at 25:45.3. The sixth place finished earned him a nod to the Horizon League First Team.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests.
