Flames Use Longball to Help Sweep Panthers on Saturday

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – UIC totaled five home runs on Saturday and the Milwaukee baseball team struggled to get going offensively dropping a pair at Franklin Field.

"They dictated the whole course of events from the jump," head coach Scott Doffek said. "Whether it was the batter's box, on the mound, or energy in the dugout. It was 1-1 early on but then they hit the three-run homer and it kind of took the wind out of our sails and we never recovered even in game two which was disappointing."

Marcus Cline provided a solo blast to lead off the fourth inning in game one, but UIC's Chris Torres was locked in on the mound.

The Flames' sophomore scattered five hits through seven complete innings before Milwaukee (15-19, 12-11 Horizon League) got to him for two unearned runs in the eighth.

Cline singled and later scored on a passed ball and Conner Goodman followed with an RBI single to plate Nick Winter but it was too little, too late for the Panthers and they fell 10-3.

Mike Edwards got the start for Milwaukee and had a couple strong innings but UIC got to him for seven runs on nine hits. The junior struck out six and walked none in five complete innings.

Nick Gilhaus had a solid outing in the ninth for the Panthers, striking out a pair in the final inning.

In game one, Jack Mahoney was moving through the first four innings with just one run allowed before the Flames tacked on four in the fifth.

An error allowed UIC (17-15, 16-10 Horizon League) to extend the inning and the Flames made MKE pay with a three-run homer to go up 5-1.

UIC added another homer in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh to come away with a 10-1 victory in the opener.

The Flames' Ryan O'Reilly put together a strong outing as he earned his third win of the year behind the complete game effort. O'Reilly struck out nine and allowed just five hits and zero earned runs.

Milwaukee had three errors in game one, and UIC took advantage, plating five unearned runs.

Cline finished game two 3-for-3 on the day with the solo homer and scored a pair of runs. Goodman went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

Luke Seidel and Jack Cavanaugh each had a pair of hits on Saturday.

The Panthers and Flames will wrap up the series tomorrow from Franklin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm with live coverage available on MKEPanthers.com.
