MILWAUKEE – Led by a pair of individual event victories from three different athletes, the Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team earned a 174-112 victory over Green Bay Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Natatorium.
"We came into this weekend looking to have a solid meet," head coach
Kyle Clements said. "We had some scheduling interruptions in our training due to pool availability and it got us out of our normal routine. For some people, you saw their times drop. For others, it was a struggle today."
McKenzie Sanchez (3-meter & 1-meter diving),
Giulia Guerra-Montes (200 backstroke & 400 IM), and
Molly Meland (100 butterfly & 100 backstroke) claimed two wins apiece to help the Panthers (2-0) top the Phoenix (0-2) for the ninth time in the past 10 meetings.
"We ended up with mixed results, but it gives us a glimpse into what we can do," Clements said. "We are extremely proud at this point. Everyone is working so hard and if we keep working, better swims will come at the end of the season."
In addition, three other MKE swimmers won individual events and both relays teams claimed victories on the day –
Antoni Haupt (1000 freestyle),
Sydney Dahl (200 freestyle), and
Bella Passamani (500 freestyle) teamed up to give Milwaukee wins in 11 of 16 total events in the meet.
Sanchez topped the field in both diving events, recording 302.78 points on one-meter and 282.08 points on three-meter.
Guerra-Montes finished first in the 400 IM in a time of 4:39.14 and led a strong showing in the 200 back, winning in 2:08.71, with teammate
Riley Melendy just behind in 2:09.38.
Meland took the 100 fly in 58.62 and the 100 back in 58.35. Melendy was again in second, touching the wall in 58.95 in a race that saw teammates 1-2-3-4. Guerra-Montes was third in 59.47.

The 200 medley relay team of Melendy, Meland,
Betsy Weil, and
Kelen McDaniels won handily in 1:46.47, while the 200 medley squad of McDaniels, Passamani,
Paige Murphy and
Cassandra Hutchins won in 1:37.42.
