CARMEL, Ind. – The Milwaukee men's cross country team narrowly missed another team trophy and turned in a fourth-place finish at the 2020 Horizon League Cross Country Championships Thursday afternoon at IUPUI's Northview Church Course.
MKE finished the very tight race with 90 points, tying for third best on the day but settling for fourth place on a tiebreaker. IUPUI repeated as league championship with 34 points. Youngstown State claimed second at 81, while Oakland wrapped up with 90. UIC (107), Northern Kentucky (169), Purdue Fort Wayne (180), Wright State (186), Detroit Mercy (214), and Green Bay (295) rounded out this year's scoring.
Trevor Wenzel cracked the top-10 with a sixth place finish and set a new PR at 25:45.3. His sixth-place finish earned him a nod to the Horizon League First Team.
"Overall, I thought the team ran well," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "Trevor (Wenzel) had a great race, and Danny (Browne) really stepped up and continued to improve as the race went on."
MKE's
Danny Browne earned Second-Team All-League honors, taking 12
th overall with a solid time of 26:15.4.
Senior
Corey Thornton crossed the finish line at 26:30.5 for 16
th, while Ian Nodolski and
Josh Freitag rounded out the scoring for the Black & Gold with times of 27:13.0 and 27.18 for 27
th and 28
th, respectively.
Freshman
Brandon O'Hara placed sixth for Milwaukee and 42
nd overall in 27:45.8 in his collegiate cross country debut, while junior
Charlie Ellenbecker came in at 28:14.3.
"We would have liked to bring home a couple of trophies from the men's side, but IUPUI and Youngstown State have strong teams," said Basler. "The great thing for us is that nearly our entire men's roster will be back next year and will be very promising."
After an incredibly busy seven days, the Panthers will now have some time to rest before turning their attention to the outdoor track & field season.
