Postseason Play Starts Wednesday At Youngstown State

Panthers, Penguins split regular-season series

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team kicks off the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Tournament this week, starting Wednesday. The Panthers earned the No. 6 seed in this year's reformatted bracket and will open things up on the road at No. 3 Youngstown State. The two teams - which split the regular-season series - will tip off at 6 pm Central from the Beeghly Center on YSU's campus. Fans can catch all the action as the game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Matt Menzl will also have the radio call and live stats will once again also be available.

LOOKING AT THE PENGUINS
It has been a special season for Youngstown State. Seniors Alison Smolinski, Sarah Cash and Melinda Trimmer all are having incredible seasons in their final go around and will be playing their final game on their home court, where the Penguins have gone 15-1 on the season.

THE FIRST TWO TIMES AROUND
The Panthers and Penguins added to their list of memorable battles earlier this season.

In the first go around, Milwaukee built a big lead only to hold off a late surge from YSU for a 71-68 overtime win in front of 3,089 fans inside the Klotsche Center. Megan Walstad recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to help MKE hand the visitors their first league loss of the season back on Jan. 10.

It was a different story one month later as Alison Smolinski drilled six of her seven three-point attempts to lead the red-hot Penguins to a 67-47 "Senior Day" win over the Panthers inside the Beeghly Center on Feb. 17.

SERIES HISTORY
MKE holds a 28-16 all-time edge over YSU. The two teams have had a number of memorable games of late, with nine of the last 10 contests being decided by eight points or fewer.

The two teams have surprisingly only met twice before in the conference tournament. YSU fought off a furious fourth-quarter rally by MKE for a 62-58 win in Detroit last year. Prior to that, Milwaukee claimed a 70-49 home win way back in the 2008-09 opening round.

UP NEXT
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the semifinals and take on the winner of Green Bay vs. Cleveland State, who also tip off Wednesday night at 7 pm Central. That semifinal contest will be played at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, Mich. at 2:30 pm Central on Monday, March 11.
