NORMAL, Ill. – With a 6-3 victory over Illinois State Tuesday evening, head coach
Scott Doffek of the Milwaukee baseball team becomes the winningest coach in program history with 348 wins.
A five-run seventh inning led Milwaukee (13-8) to it's fifth-straight victory while the Panthers took down Illinois State (13-9) in its mid-week matchup from Duffy Bass Field.
"We got a fantastic start from Mac (
Alex McIntosh)," said head coach
Scott Doffek. "He really set the tone early on, and then we took advantage of a miscue on their end to put up a big inning and take control."
Redshirt Senior
Alex McIntosh got the nod against the Red Birds and picked up the win having pitched five strong innings while scattering just five hits, allowing zero runs and striking out three.
Milwaukee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when
Tyler Bordner hit in
Devin Rybacki on the sacrifice fly to center field.
From there, it was a pitching duel between the Panthers and Red Birds.
In the bottom of the fifth, ISU threatened with runners on first and second, but McIntosh and the Panthers closed the door getting Derek Parola to pop out to first base.
The Panthers broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits, and an ISU error. With bases loaded and one out, senior
Devin Rybacki hit an infield single scoring
Oakland Scanlan for it's first run of the inning.
After a bases loaded walk forced by Mitchelle Buban, Milwaukee plated two more runs thanks to a Red Bird throwing error by the shortstop. The scoring fiasco finally came to a close after
Tyler Bordner hit his team-leading 10
th double putting MKE up 6-0.
The Red Birds, however, didn't go down quietly scoring three in the bottom of the eighth to cut MKE's lead in half.
In ISU's last-chance at-bats, MKE's
Jake Sommers began the inning with a strike out, followed by a single through the right side. A single is all that the Red Birds would be able to manage as Sommers struck out the next batter and got the final batter to ground out to third to end the game.
MKE utilized a total of five pitchers in the game, and four in the final four frames to come away with the victory.
Nate DeYoung and
Devin Rybacki led the Panthers with two hits each, including two doubles for DeYoung.
Next on the schedule, Milwaukee will look to host conference foe UIC in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 29. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Henry Aaron Field.
