DAYTON, Ohio – Mike Edwards allowed no earned runs in seven innings, but a late Wright State comeback turned the day around and sent the Milwaukee baseball team back home on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium.
"That one hurts," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We faced extremely tough conditions in the last two innings with heavy snow coming down. It was just extremely unfortunate. Edwards was fantastic all day, but we just beat ourselves in the ninth inning in some brutal conditions."
The Panthers (8-8, 1-2 Horizon League) were three outs away from a series win against the Raiders (11-5, 2-1 Horizon League) after taking a 2-1 lead into the final inning, but were unable to close it out.
"Despite what the box score says that might be the best we swung the bats all year," Doffek said. "I am not sure I have ever seen that many line outs."
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, opening the scoring on a two-out single to center field off the bat of
Colin Kreiter.
MKE doubled its advantage in the fifth, again with two outs. This time it was
Tyler Bordner, coming up with one of his two hits on the day to make it 2-0 at the time.
Edwards allowed just five hits and the one unearned run, walking two and striking out two.
WSU plated one in the fifth to make it a one-run affair and then took advantage of a pair of errors in the ninth to win it.
Horizon League action continues with a three-game series at Northern Kentucky. The opener is set for a first pitch of 2 p.m. CST Friday.
