MILWAUKEE – Grant Coleman of Mahomet, Ill., Donovan Newby of Chicago Heights, Ill, and Kaleim Taylor of Milwaukee, Wis., have all signed their National Letters of Intent to play next season for the Milwaukee men's basketball team.
"We are extremely excited to welcome the trio of signees Kaleim Taylor, Grant Coleman and Donovan Newby to our Panther Family," head coach
Pat Baldwin said. "As we continue to progress and build our program, we are really focusing on the elements of skill which all three have, and is essential in college basketball. In addition to their skill set, they are extremely tough and come from winning backgrounds at both the high school and AAU level. Most importantly, their families are well-represented in their lives and are prominent in their development as young men. We truly believe they will continue to add to our culture of high character, hard work and basketball savvy."
Baldwin announced the signings today.
"We are excited they will firmly entrench themselves into the fabric of Milwaukee Panther basketball and build upon the tradition established by so many great players who have made their mark here," Baldwin said.
Coleman, a 6-foot, 7-inch senior at Mahomet-Seymour High School, is coming off a very impressive junior campaign where he was named First-Team All-Apollo Conference after averaging over 20 points a game. He led the Bulldogs in scoring, free-throw percentage, rebounding and 3-pointers last winter and also plays for Indiana Elite on the AAU circuit.
"Grant is a very skilled player who will allow us to use him in a variety of ways offensively," Baldwin said. "He has tremendous size and skill which allows him to shoot with NBA range, put the ball on the floor and make plays for himself or teammates off the dribble. In certain matchups, he has the ability to post up and play effectively as a face-up scorer."
Newby, a 6-foot, 1-inch guard from Bloom High School, was a key piece of a ranked Blazing Trojans squad that finished 26-4 before falling in the sectional semifinals. Newby, who plays AAU for the Illinois Wolves, is among the City/Suburban Hoops Report's Top 25 prospects in the class and averaged double-figures as a junior.
"Donovan is a highly-skilled guard and facilitator who shoots the ball with deep range, has an ability to play off the dribble and one of his greatest attributes is his ability to pass," Baldwin said. "Donovan has great leadership characteristics and makes his teammates better."
Taylor, a 6-foot, 3-inch guard at Milwaukee Academy of Sciences, enjoyed a breakout season as a junior. He improved his rebounding from 5.8 per game to 10.5 while also setting career-highs with his 22.7 point and 5.5 assists per-game averages. He was named
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Fourth-Team All-Area. He also plays for All-In Athletics on the AAU circuit. The high-scoring Taylor hit the 1,000-point barrier as a junior, helped along by per-game scoring averages of 22.2 ppg as a high school sophomore (adding 5.8 rpg/4.9 apg) and 16.6 ppg as a freshman (7.3 rpg).
"Kaleim is a Milwaukee native who allows us to continue to firmly plant roots in the backyard of our city," Baldwin said. "He is extremely tough, can score at a high level, play multiple positions and has a tremendous basketball IQ. We are very excited Kaleim chose to stay home and represent the city of Milwaukee. He is another great foundational piece and tremendous representative for young high school players in the area to play in front of family and friends."
