Horizon League Unveils Preseason Basketball Poll

Young Panthers picked to battle in strong conference

MILWAUKEE – Despite graduating two all-conference players and four starters from a team that advanced to the WNIT Second Round one season ago, the Milwaukee women's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League, the conference office announced Thursday with the unveiling of the 2018-19 preseason poll.

Voted on by league coaches, media members and sports information directors, the Panthers – coming off a program record three-consecutive postseason appearances – received 165 points in the voting for fifth place in a tightly-packed middle of the standings.

This year's squad will have a different look to it after four starters from a year ago graduated, including all-league selections Jenny Lindner and Steph Kostowicz, as well as one of Milwaukee's all-time leaders in three-point shooting in Bailey Farley. In all, the Panthers graduate 65-percent of scoring from last year's squad that went 21-12.

Green Bay was picked to win the league with 286 points, garnering 28 of the 29 first-place votes. IUPUI was picked second with 245 points, followed by Wright State (226) and Youngstown State (184), which received the one other first-place selection.

Northern Kentucky was tabbed just behind MKE with 152 points for sixth, followed by Oakland (117), Cleveland State (99), Detroit Mercy (65) and UIC (56).

Milwaukee is just over two weeks ago from its first official action on the court with a Nov. 1 home exhibition contest against UW-Parkside. The Panthers officially kick off the 2018-19 season Nov. 7 on the road at Indiana.
