PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Milwaukee baseball team enjoyed a day in sunny Arizona that was once again the culmination of many efforts between the University and the Milwaukee Brewers. Although the Brewers may have won by an 11-2 tally on the scoreboard, the exhibition contest was a great day for all involved.
Â
The Panthers actually led the contest early, with the team taking a 2-1 advantage when
Eric Solberg dropped a single to center that plated
Nick Unes and
Mike Jordahl in the top of the second inning.
Â
"I thought we came out of the gates swinging the bat pretty well," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We were certainly more aggressive than last year and the box score will show that. To have a lead early was good, we just didn't pitch well enough."
Â
The Brewers went back ahead in the bottom of the third on a pair of two-run home runs off the bat of Orlando Arcia and Will Middlebrooks and led the rest of the day.
Â
Solberg paced the offense with a 2-for-3 day that included those RBI's. The team finished with eight in the hit column, as
Luke Meeteer,
Billy Quirke,
Ian Ross, Unes,
Dan Barwick and Jordahl all added base hits in the MLB exhibition contest.
The Panthers may not have had as much success against the Brewers pitching as they would have liked, but did put up eight hits and played well defensively. They turned three double plays – including one on a soft liner to Quirke in right center field where he quickly picked off the runner at second and another on a comebacker in the sixth that
Elijah Goodman nicely converted into a 1-6-3 twin-killing.
Â
"I can't thank everyone enough for allowing us this opportunity," Doffek said. "I know for our guys it is something that we will never forget."
On a perfect day for baseball, the game was well-attended and well-covered, including stories from the following writers:
