Women’s Swimming Dominant Over Thunder

Panthers win all but one event Friday

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's swimming team continued its outstanding start to the season with an emphatic showing Friday against Wheaton to the tune of a 128-71 win from the Klotsche Natatorium.

UWM won all but one event on the night and seven different Panthers won in cruising to its second-straight win to start the season.

"Tonight was a fun night," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. "It was nice to actually host another team in our pool and it was also very informative. It's been two weeks since we have raced anybody, and it was nice to see where everybody currently is 'time wise'.

"The confidence we gained tonight will help us face this year's biggest test in Wright State come Sunday."

Natalie Johnson led the way for Milwaukee with a pair of wins on the night. The senior started things off with a W in the first individual event of the night, the 1000 freestyle, winning in 10:32.63 – over 20 seconds ahead of the next finisher.

Johnson notched her second win of the night in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:10.48 for another sizable victory.

Keely Frankwicz recorded the first win of her young collegiate career. The freshman from Madison clocked in at 59.19 in the 100 back for the win, just beating out teammate Gabby Sanchez at 59.52.

The Panthers took the top three spots in the 200 free. Emma Helgeson topped the field in 1:57.23, just edging out Alena Bodnaruk at 1:57.62, while Arica Smith also swam well and took third.

Milwaukee continued its dominance of the freestyle events when Mandie Siehs took to the pool in the 50 free. The senior finished in 23.78 – an early season-best time. Shelby Rozeboom came in second in 24.18.

Danielle Kudis then completed the sweep of the freestyle events, taking the 100 free title on the night with a winning time of 52.69 – fractions of a second ahead of teammate Sara Bentley at 52.77.

In the 400 IM, it was Addison Skogman's turn. The sophomore, who set the school record in the event last season as a freshman, picked up right where she left off with a winning time of 4:34.36.

Kady Ruemmele brought home Milwaukee's final individual win of the night, taking the 100 fly crown in 57.97 with newcomer Cecilia Ostergren right behind in 58.01.

The Panthers also won both relays on the night. Bentley, Adrienne DiFoggio, Ruemmele and Smith won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.80, while Smith, Rozeboom, Kudis and Siehs combined with a top spot in the 200 free relay in 1:36.37.

Milwaukee is right back at it, hosting Wright State Sunday at noon from the Klotsche Natatorium.
