CHICAGO, Ill. -
UIC scored four runs in the sixth inning to open up a 1-0 contest and then held off the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team from there in claiming a 5-3 victory in the weekend series finale Sunday afternoon at Granderson Stadium.
The Flames (22-19, 15-9 Horizon League) solidified their hold on second place over the Panthers (16-21, 8-10 Horizon League) on the weekend, extending their winning streak on the season to eight in a row.
"I thought we did a nice job on the hill today, to be honest," UWM head coach Scott Doffek said. "That team is really locked in offensively right now. They took advantage with guys in scoring position in the middle part of the game - we had some of the same opportunities and just couldn't come up with that big two-out hit."
Junior Eric King made the most of his limited start, opening the matchup with three straight scoreless innings, allowing just a pair of hits.
The Flames opened the scoring with an unearned run in the fourth and then decided the outcome in the sixth inning. The team nearly batted around, plating four runs on six hits to take a 5-0 lead.
Milwaukee would not give up, scoring a run in the seventh on a sac fly from freshman Eric Solberg and twice more in the eighth on an error and an RBI-groundout.
The offense came up with 10 more hits, with three players turning in multi-hit outings. In addition to Eric Solberg, who finished 2-for-3, senior brother Ryan Solberg went 2-for-3 and junior Tyler Hermann finished 2-for-4.
The Panthers return home next, welcoming Chicago State to Henry Aaron Field on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
