CHICAGO, Ill. -
Tomas Michelson allowed no earned runs in eight innings and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team did not help its own cause with a bad day on defense Saturday, falling 8-2 to UIC at Granderson Stadium.
The Panthers (4-11, 0-1 Horizon League) finally got the chance to play their first conference game of the season, but broke a school record by committing nine errors in falling to the Flames (7-12, 3-4 Horizon League).
The Panthers allowed two unearned runs in the first three innings and were held off the scoreboard until the seventh inning.
Down 5-0 at the time, the Panthers put together a rally of their own to make it 5-2. But, they were unable to keep any of the momentum in their dugout, as the Flames plated three more in the eighth inning to put it away.
Sophomore Brian Keller (0-3) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in 7.0 innings. He walked one and struck out five.
The offense managed just five hits off Michelson (2-2), who walked one and fanned six. Junior Mike Porcaro was the only player with more than one hit at 2-for-4.
The nine errors easily surpassed the former high-water mark of seven in a game. UWM will look to bounce back quickly, playing UIC in a Sunday doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
