NILES, Ohio -
Patrick O'Brien threw a complete game to lead Youngstown State University to a 10-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
A day after piling up 14 runs and 17 hits, the Panthers (12-13, 8-3 Horizon League) were limited to just one run and five hits by the Penguins (8-21, 4-4 Horizon League).
"That was just a bad combination for us," UWM head coach Scott Doffek said. "Cale could not repeat his delivery today and O'Brien was very sharp. They did a real nice job in the batter's box all afternoon too. It's important to come out sharp on both sides of the ball tomorrow and find a way to win the series."
Milwaukee could not solve O'Brien (2-3), who did not walk a batter and struck out seven. In fact, the only runner to even reach third base was in the sixth inning when UWM scored its only run.
YSU scored in each of the first five innings, touching up senior Cale Tassi (3-4) over the first two innings for five runs on six hits.
Sophomore Derek Peake was a bright spot on offense, finishing the day with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Seniors Jonathan Capasso and Alex Erdmann were the only other players with a hit. Mike Accardi, Drew Dosch and Josh White all had three hits for YSU.
The Penguins got a run in the first and made it 3-0 in the second. They tacked on two more in the third, a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 8-0 before UWM got on the board.
Milwaukee broke up the shutout bid in the sixth inning. Erdmann led off with a single, went to third on a single by Peake and scored on a double-play.
Milwaukee looks to take the series tomorrow, set for a 12 p.m. CST start time.
