MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 24, 2012) -
No. 13 Marquette scored a pair of goals in each half and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team just could not get its offense on track in a 4-0 loss to the Golden Eagles Friday evening at Valley Fields.
The loss is the first of the season for the Panthers (1-1-1), while MU improves to 2-0.
"Marquette played a tough, solid match tonight and we were just outplayed. Its' difficult moment for our team," UWM head coach Greg Henschel said. "We're going to get better from this. We're going to learn from it and get better from it. The challenge we're facing is to push through this."
Marquette got onto the board quickly, striking in just the 10th minute when Maegan Kelly set up Rachael Sloan for the eventual game-winner. The second goal was courtesy of unfortunate defending, as the Panthers had two chances to clear, but was unable to get the ball to their feet to do so. After a second short header, Emily Jacobson headed the ball back into the box to Kate Reigle, who out the ball into the net from 12 yards.
It was much of the same after halftime, as Milwaukee was never able to get its footing in the game offensively. The Golden Eagles, however, generated a number of chances and added a pair of goals after halftime, with Cara Jacobson and Ally Miller getting on the board for the home team.
MU finished with a decisive 21-3 shot advantage and forced all 11 of the game's corner kicks. Forbes finished with six saves on the night. Her counterpart, Sofie Schunk, was not called on to make a save in her second shutout of the season.
The Panthers return to action Sunday, hosting Miami (Ohio) at Engelmann Stadium.
