ATHENS, Ohio -
Ohio University claimed an extra-inning victory for the second time in the series, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team, 3-2, in 10 innings Sunday at Wren Stadium. The Panthers (3-13) led early and had to battle back to send it to extras, but Seth Streich won it for the Bobcats (10-9) in the 10th with a walkoff single to right.
Milwaukee received another quality pitching effort, with senior Chad Pierce and sophomore Cale Tassi combining for eight strikeouts and just one walk through nine innings in allowing three earned runs.
"It was a shame to waste that type of pitching effort," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "Chad Pierce gave us a good start and Cale came in and did a real nice job as well. The whole weekend, our pitchers gave us good innings. We are just pressing in so many ways right now."
The Panthers struck first with a run in the second, but could not get much going against Ohio's Jason Moulton, who did not allow an earned run and struck out nine in his nine innings of work.
After the Bobcats went ahead, 2-1, with single tallies in the fifth and sixth, UWM finally tied the game in the eighth on a run-scoring single by junior Paul Hoenecke. Milwaukee had chances, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and stranding nine runners on base in the contest. The offense managed just five hits on the day.
"The guys are just playing with the weight of the world on their shoulders," Doffek said. "They just need to relax and execute the play in front of them. When they do, good things will happen. This is a tough game and when you lose your edge, it has a way of beating you down. I know one thing - we will not give in."
Next up, the team plays its final series before beginning Horizon League action. The Panthers head to Indiana for a four-game weekend series with IPFW.
