ATHENS, Ohio -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team had weather suspend its game against Ohio University Friday at Wren Stadium. The Panthers took an early 3-0 lead, only to see the Bobcats battle back and force a tie at 3-3 with a two-run fifth inning. Following a 43-minute rain delay in the sixth inning, the contest was then suspended in the eighth when the rains returned and will be finished tomorrow.
Milwaukee jumped out quickly, plating two in the second inning without having a hit leave the infield. A ground out scored the first run and freshman Tell Taylor beat out a single to short that plated another. UWM could have done more damage, but left the bases loaded.
The Panthers had the bases loaded with no outs again in the third but scored just once. Senior Doug Dekoning led off with a double and would eventually score on a wild pitch, but Ohio would stop the rally.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard on a home run by Jensen Painter in the fourth and tied it with two in the fifth inning on the strength of three hits.
Sophomore Jordan Guth allowed three runs and struck out four in 5.0 innings of his start for Milwaukee. Freshman Gunnar Eastman did not allow a hit in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Dekoning has two hits and junior Paul Hoenecke is 3-for-4.
The game will resume at 12 noon tomorrow and the scheduled doubleheader will follow after completion of the contest. The Bobcats have two runners on base with just one out via an error and a walk.
NOTE: Milwaukee lost the game, 4-3, in 11 innings.
