Post-Game Wrap-Up
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 19, 2011) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team shot better than 50 percent from the field for much of the afternoon, but could not overcome 23 turnovers in falling to No. 14/17 Green Bay, 77-59, Saturday at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers (9-16, 6-8 Horizon) finished with 23 turnovers compared to 20 made field goals to negate 47.6 percent shooting in a tightly-played contest. The Phoenix (25-1, 14-0 Horizon) used a key 16-5 run late to pull away and win its 16th-straight game and at least a share of the 2011 Horizon league regular season championship.
"After the last time we played Green Bay, I was pleased with how we competed (today)," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said. "We made a game of it and made plays. Last time, we laid an egg. Overall, I thought we played well. We did a lot of nice things and put ourselves in position to beat one of the top teams in the country."
Lindsay Laur led three players for Milwaukee in double-figures with 17 points. She added eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out at the 2:12 mark of the second half. Sami Tucker chipped in with 14 points, while Anne Breland knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points.
Kayla Tetschlag, the preseason player of the year in the Horizon League, scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting for GB, pulling down nine boards, as well. Celeste Hoewisch battled foul trouble to score 14 points and Julie Wojta finished with 10 points and eight assists.
After a one-sided contest in the first meeting this season, the Panthers hung with Green Bay for most of the game. A Laur jumper made it a 52-46 game with 11:27 to play, but the Phoenix then went on a 16-5 run to push its lead to double-digits and never looked back. UWM was held to just one field goal over a seven-minute span during the run.
Despite that cold stretch, Milwaukee still shot 47.6 percent from the field and made 7-of-15 from three-point range. The team also forged a 28-25 rebounding advantage, the seventh-straight game the Panthers have outrebounded their opponent, dating back to the last GB game.
The Phoenix shot 53.7 percent for the game, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc. GB finished with 38 points in the paint and turned Panther turnovers into 30 points.
Milwaukee kept the nationally-ranked Phoenix in its sights for most of the game, answering each run with one of its own. Seven-straight Green Bay points in the first half made it 32-22, but UWM quickly got a Breland three-pointer and a Tucker three-point play to make it 32-28. A 7-3 run to end the first half made it 39-31 at the break.
In the second half, the teams traded scoring possessions to start the frame before Green Bay hit three-straight baskets. Again, Milwaukee fought back behind six-straight points from Lindsay Laur to keep the game within six. It was moments later that the Phoenix rattled off its decisive run.
The Panthers return to action next week, hosting Butler Thursday at the Klotsche Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
